Construction Truck Birthday Party Theme

Birthday parties are so much fun to plan, especially kid parties. My little guy is a huge fan of trucks, so having a construction truck party was the perfect theme for his 2nd birthday. If you’re looking for some ideas on how to create a perfect construction truck themed birthday party for your little one, keep reading!

I remember when my son was born everyone told me to enjoy every second because it goes fast, and they were right!! I don’t know how he’s 2 years old already. This stage is one of my favorites. He’s talking all the time and we now get to learn who our little person is. One of his favorite things right now is trucks, especially construction trucks. After some quick Google searches, I had a good idea of how I was going to put together his party!

Here is a peak at my party planning list!

Invitations

Our party this year was a bit smaller than we hoped for because of the pandemic. We just had a small get together with grandparents but I would have loved to send out these cute invites. They were still were really fun to make.

Decorations

What would we do without Amazon?! There are endless options for the traditional yellow and black construction style decorations.

Because it was a smaller party, I kept it simple with decoration tape, a tablecloth, and some cool centerpieces. The centerpieces didn’t come with cones, but you can find a similar style here.

Canva had me on a roll after making those invites, and I decided to also make some cute signs to hang up. Download and print for free below.

PLATES AND CUPS

The blue in this set was a nice touch and change up from all the yellow and black. It serves 24 people, complete with cups, dinner plates, dessert plates and napkins. It was more than enough for snacks, food and cake!

Birthday Cake

This was my favorite part of planning his party! I love to bake! And let’s be honest, cake is the best part about a birthday party!

Some of my fondest memories are of the homemade birthday cakes my mom made. A superman cake complete with a flying action hero, and strawberry shortcake cake that looked like it had been plucked right out of a cartoon. I don’t remember many gifts from my birthdays as a kid, but my mom’s cakes will always be a special memory. It is a loving tradition I will happily continue for my son.

Pinterest has endless ideas of how to make a truck cake. There are so many cute styles!

After finding my cake inspiration, and a great cake recipe all that was left were the cake decorations. Some small trucks, almonds (boulders) and Oreos (dirt) was all it took!

This set of trucks from Amazon was the PERFECT size. I was able to fit 3 different style trucks on a 9 inch round cake.

The cake recipe:

For the cake, I used a recipe from the website Sugar Spun Run called,

The Best Birthday Cake Recipe

This cake lives up to its name! It was delicious! The vanilla cake was sweet but finished with a rich buttery flavor. 10 out of 10 would recommend this recipe!

Samantha from Sugar Spun Run has endless delicious options if you’re in the baking mood! She also has recipes for anything else you could imagine, and her videos make it so easy to follow along. I highly suggest you check her site! She’s sweet and charming just like a perfect birthday cake!

One tip I always try to remember when making a cake from scratch is to spoon in the flour into your measuring cup. This allows for a lighter, fluffier cake.

You can most certainly use a box cake too!

The Cake Construction:

  • After baking your three 9 inch round cakes, frost only the middle layers and stack them.
  • Next, decide where you “access road” will be on the cake and carefully carve out a diagonal slice from the side of the cake.
  • Then finish frosting the top, sides, and “road” parts of the cake.
  • Pre-draw or print out a number stencil to use and trace an outline using a toothpick.
  • Crush up Oreos and spoon them into your number outline, and onto the road.
  • Place trucks along the top and sides or the cake, and spoon on any extra Oreos dirt where you’d like.
  • For boulders, I used chocolate covered almonds and placed some along the top of the cake as well as in one of the trucks. (see photo)

If I’m being honest, I did have a few moments when I thought, why the heck did I decide to do this, but seeing the beaming smile and hearing the shriek of “Trucks!” from my son when he saw his cake made it all worth it. Now I know why my mom baked her little heart out for us! There is nothing like seeing pure joy in your child’s face.

These are the memories I will cherish, especially knowing how fast these years are going! I hope this helped give some inspiration and ideas for your own birthday party!

Celebrate, enjoy and happy Construction Truck Birthday Party planning!
