5 DIY Beauty Treatments you can do at home to save over $800 a Month!

If you are finding you have less time, money or patience for beauty treatments, but you still want to look your best, you’ve come to the right place! I want to share with you 5 Home DIY beauty treatments for hair, nails, tanning, brows and lashes that can save you over $800 a month.

I’ve a huge fan of doing DIY projects, even if that project happens to be ME. Some people enjoy a salon day and getting pampered. And while it is nice, going every 2-4 weeks to maintain hair, nails or lashes just doesn’t appeal to me.  Between the time and expense, doing things myself has become more appealing. The treatments I do are easy, affordable and can be done in the comfort of your own home!

All of my “do-it-yourself” treatments have been successful! There’s been some epic fails, but after some trial and error, I’ve found fool-proof products and techniques to rely on. These treatments help keep my routine as low maintenance as possible.

I don’t want to have to spend hours getting ready, but I do want to look my best. Now I’m able look glam without the effort or expense. Easy beauty on a budget, yes please!

Let’s talk DIY beauty shall we!

1.HAIR (Keratin Treatment & DIY Long Layered Cut)

Disclaimer :

Before I dive into the hair treatments I do, I want to preface this by saying I am not a licensed stylist. I am sharing this as purely as information and encourage you to do your own research.

I think my love for DIYhair came from my grandmother, who I called Nanny. At 10 years old, she had me helping her with home color and perms. I loved every second of it. She passed some years ago, but I like to think she gets a kick seeing me follow in her footsteps!

Keratin Treatment

WHAT I USE: Inverto One Multifunctional Keratin Treatment by Keratin Research

COST: $45.00

WHY I LOVE IT:  The price, it’s formaldehyde and paraben free, and leaves me with wash and wear hair.

Hair can make or break our days. I have longed wished for wash and wear hair. My hair is naturally wavy/curly, very thick and can frizz quite easily. Between washing, conditioning and drying it can be a 2-hour process. As a busy momma, I don’t have the same time or patience anymore. I became desperate to find something to make it more manageable. I tried several “in salon” keratin treatments, paid upwards of $350, but nothing really gave me the results I was looking for.

Until NOW! Enter Keratin Research

This was an Amazon find, and it has been a game changer for me! This line has several treatments, but I use the Inverto One Multifunctional Keratin Treatment. It’s formaldehyde free and has no harsh chemicals, which I love. No toxic fumes when your doing the treatment, an important detail if you’re doing home treatments. The process of application I easy and much faster than other treatments I’ve had.

  • Start by washing your hair with a purifying shampoo (provided with the solution)
  • Dry hair and apply solution with hands or brush
  • Wait approximately 1 hour
  • Rinse, dry and flat iron

Okay, that sounds like a lot, but compared to other treatments I have had, it is SO EASY. It can take some time to do the treatment, but it will save you time in the long run!

The results I’ve have blown my mind. My hair is smooth, soft, frizz free and dries in half the time! The best part is I can air dry it if I want. I can’t tell you the freedom I feel to know that’s an option. It is liberating!

With Inverto One you don’t have to wait 3-5 days to wash your hair unlike other treatments. You can wash it the next day, but you probably won’t want to. The hair is left feeling soft and flowy, not stiff or sticky compared to other keratin treatments.

Now to the best part, it’s $45 bucks! That’s almost 1/10 of what you would pay in a salon. I may do a more in-depth review of this product and give some tips and tricks. But trust me, if you want to make your hair-life easy, try this! You will not be disappointed.

DIY Long Layered Haircut

WHAT I USE: Stylist Shears, straight comb

COST: $16.99

WHY I LOVE IT: The convenience, the savings and the control of the length.

I have been cutting my own hair for over 10 years now. I know there are amazing stylists out there, and I respect the profession. It is not easy. I unfortunately had one too many bad experiences and decided to try to take things into my own hands.

Thank goodness for YouTube!

My experience cutting hair has ONLY been cutting long layered styles. If you want a blunt haircut, or bob, it’s probably better to see a professional stylist. But if layers are your thing, I got you girl!

There are endless tutorials on YouTube that have helped me. I have tried a few different methods but the Unicorn Method is by far the easiest. You flip your hair over your head, brush it all out, and make a ponytail on the front of your forehead. Brush hair and hold it straight out, at a 90 degree angle from your face. Then cut the ends. I like to trim the length first, and then point cut into the hair, so it’s not heavy looking.

This YouTube video from is a perfect tutorial!

Make sure to use professional cutting shears and go slow! You can always go back and cut more off. Layered looks are easy to wear even if they aren’t textbook perfect, but I do get a great result. My mother-in-law, who is a hairstylist, is always impressed.

2. NAILS

WHAT I USECoconut Nail Art by Incoco Nail Polish Strips

COST: $4.97

WHY I LOVE IT: It’s easy, has fun colors and designs and you cannot beat the price!

So, I might be alone here, but I don’t like getting manicures. I suppose as a treat every so often is nice but having to maintain a manicure every 2-3 weeks becomes another chore, not to mention the expense. I do love having nice nails, so I had to come up with another option.

Something about having your nails done just makes you feel like you have your life together.

Standard polish never lasts for me, and I get impatient waiting for them to dry, and usually smudge them. I tried some home gel polish systems but didn’t have the best experience and the removal process can be time consuming.

Sans polish was my style for a bit, until venturing into the world of nail polish strips. If you have not heard of these, you are in for a treat. These are exactly what they sound like. They are pre-sized strips made with real nail polish meant to peal and stick directly onto the nail. The process is easy-peasy.

You’re your cuticles back, prep the nail with alcohol, and apply strip to nail, smooth, trim away excess and you are DONE! Your good to go for 1-2 weeks. No drying time, or UV lamp. It’s genius and fool-proof.

I personally like to add a top coat using Seche Vite, which dries instantly. When the color starts to chip, or you want to change up your look, just use regular nail polish remover to remove. Easy right?!

The brand I have been loving is called Coconut Nail Art by Incoco Nail Polish Strips. These have been the easiest to apply, are only $5 and they have so many fun color options. They also make nail strips made for pedicures. I haven’t tried those yet, but I will update when I do!

You can try them here!

3. Tanning

WHAT I USE: Rossa Self Tanning

COST: $34.99

WHY I LOVE IT: Rapid color payoff, deep bronze color, made with natural and organic ingredients and doesn’t dry my skin.

Hi my name is Shauna and I am addicted to self-tanning.

I am 100% Irish, and my skin tone proves it. It’s important to embrace who you are, but a bronze glow just makes me happy. A fresh tan to me looks youthful, more tone, more awake and alive. I just love a good glow!

Spray tans are great, but I have to say I don’t miss standing awkwardly in my panties while someone blasts cold brown air at me. Rossa Self-Tanning is hands down better than anything out there. Better than any professional spray tan or self-tanner I’ve ever tried.

The formula is magic. It goes on so easy, doesn’t have that “tanner’ smell, and doesn’t dry my skin. The tan will lasts about a week for me and fades really evenly. There are several color options color to choose from, but I like the RST Rapid Bronzer. The color develops in 3-4 hours which is great if you are short on time but need a glow!

Their website offers in depth descriptions to describe the tone each product will give. RST Rapid Bronzer leaves a perfect chocolate tone for me and is by far the best color pay out I’ve ever seen with a self-tanner.

If you want to look like you just stepped off the plane from the Caribbean, then grab your bottle here!

Tips for Flawless Self Tan:

  1. Shave and exfoliate the day before tanning. Doing it right before application it can change the pH of the skin and effect the color development.
  2. Apply a light layer of lotion to dry areas; knees, elbows and ankles.
  3. Use a back applicator to help apply color to hard to reach areas.
  4. Use vinyl gloves. I used tanning mitts for year, but gloves make a HUGE difference. The color blends out easier, and you don’t have to use as much product!
  5. Use a tanning spray for hands and feet.

4. & 5. Brows & Lashes

For Growth

WHAT I USE: Castor Oil & Hello Skincare Lash Therapy

COSTCastor Oil: $9.99 Lash Therapy: $75

WHY I LOVE ITCastor Oil: It’s all natural and affordable. Lash Therapy: Uses peptides, vitamins and amino acids, it’s non-irritating and has a 60-day refund policy.

For Color

WHAT I USE: 1000 Hour Eyelash & Brow Dye/Tint Kit Permanent Mascara

COST: $32.95

WHY I LOVE IT: Allows an option to go without mascara or brow gel, such a huge time saver.

Lets do a bogo for our last topic of lashes and brows and discuss them together.

The eyes frame the face. Great brows set the tone and lashes help bring it home.

In all honesty, when I am trying to get out the door quick, but still want to look put together, brows and lashes and Chapstick are my go-to.

The rage now is microblading for brows and lash extensions. Don’t get me wrong, the results are beautiful, but it’s another costly treatment and requires maintenance (time). Not what I am going for!

Here is what I do instead!

Brows:

Long ago I fell into the no-existent eyebrow trend and over-tweezed my poor brows. They have recovered since, but I still like to keep them conditioned and help inspire new growth.

For that I use castor oil for growth and thickness, tweeze as needed, and then dye them using 1000 Hours Dye. My brows tend to be light, especially in the tail portion. Using this dye makes them look like I have fuller and darker brows. I just brush them up a bit and I’m out the door.

Lashes:

I have always had longer lashes, but age (hello 40) and postpartum, left them less to be desired. I was hesitant to try a growth serum because of negative side effects I’ve read about. Then I came across Lash Therapy on Instagram. The testimonials and before/after pictures had me hooked. Lash Therapy has natural peptides and nourishing, natural ingredients.

You apply the serum at night using along the lash line, and you’re done. It can take 6-8 weeks to see the full effects, but I noticed lash retention right away.  It’s never left my eyes irritated or red, and I now have lashes for days and I’m often asked if they are real. Occasionally I also use the 1000 Hour Dye on my lashes, which allows me to go sans mascara!

Hello Skincare is offering 10% off any order using the code, Shauna10. They also have free 2-day shipping on orders over $200 and offer a 60-day promise. If you are not happy for any reason, you can return the product within 60 days for a refund. But trust me, you won’t be sending anything back! You can find Lash Therapy here!

The salon treatments mentioned can last longer than 4 weeks, but it is eye opening to see the cost of everything if you need it within the same month.
